Clinical Analysis of Congenital Malformations in the Newborn Infant

Abstract
A clinical study was done in 113 cases of congenital malformation among 9, 807 newborns, who were born at KANGNAM ST. MARY¢¥S Hospital during the period of 5 years from August 1980 to July 1985.
The results were summerized as follows:
1) Among total newborns, Congenital anomalies were 113 cases (1.15%) and the frequency of male congenital anomalies was 1.05% and that of female was 1.25%.
2) The incidence of malformation in low birth weight infants (3. 98%) was higher than that of high birth weight infants (0.92%).
The frequency of anomalies in prematures below 37 wks (2.94%) was higher than that of matured babies above 37 wks (0.96%).
3) There was no difference of frequency of anomalies between above (2.01%) and below (1.12%) 35 years of maternal age groups (p>0.05)
4) Among 113 malformed babies, 33(29.2%) babies have more than one anomaly.
5) Digestive system was the most frequent involving system (26.96%) and Musculoskeletal system, Cutaneous system, Central nervous system, Cardiovascular system followed in that order.
6) The most frequent involved system which cause the babies to death was central nervous system (33.33% of all deaths).
7) Among 167 malformed babies, 118 babies (70.66%) had major malformation and 49 (29. 34%) had minor malformation.
